About BuildCalc

About BuildCalc for BuildCalc.

BuildCalc is a small independent site that does one job: work out how much bulk material a project needs. It is run by one person, not a content team, and the calculators are built and maintained alongside the writing.

Who writes this

My background is in construction estimating and site work. I have spent enough time standing next to a truck watching a pour come up short to have strong opinions about waste allowances, and enough time explaining to a homeowner why the pile of gravel in the driveway is not going to spread as far as they thought.

Every calculator on this site comes from the same starting point: a question I have been asked, or have had to work out myself, on an actual job.

How the site is maintained

  • Material coefficients (bulk density, bag yields, compaction and settling factors) are checked against published supplier and industry data.
  • Prices are reviewed periodically against national averages, but they are planning figures. The editable price field exists because your quote is the only number that matters.
  • Depth guidance is reviewed when the underlying standards or common practice change — for example, reinforcement guidance for driveways has firmed up considerably in the last decade.
  • Corrections are genuinely welcome. If a number on this site is wrong for your region, tell me and I will fix it.

What the site does not do

BuildCalc does not sell material, does not take commission from suppliers, and does not accept sponsored placements in calculator results. There are no affiliate links in the calculators. The site is funded by advertising, which is why you will see ad slots on the pages — they are clearly separated from the results and never inside the calculator output.

The calculators are planning aids. They are not engineering advice, and they are not a substitute for a permit review or a site inspection.
